Los Angeles Speed Cameras Go Live October 26: What Drivers Need to Know

October 13, 2026

Los Angeles drivers are about to face a new kind of speeding enforcement. Starting October 26, 2026, the city will begin activating automated speed cameras that can detect speeding vehicles without an officer pulling anyone over. LADOT expects all 125 systems to be activated by the end of the year. ladot.lacity.gov

The rollout follows months of planning, public review, location selection, and program preparation. City Council approved the locations and required policy reports in March, and installation began October 1. Now, the first cameras are preparing to go online. Los Angeles Department of Transportation

But October 26 does not mean drivers immediately start receiving fines. Each camera location begins with a warning period, and the rules differ depending on how fast a vehicle is traveling.

Here is what drivers need to know about Los Angeles speed camera tickets, fines, locations, and their options if a notice arrives.

When Do Los Angeles Speed Cameras Start Issuing Tickets?

The first Los Angeles speed cameras activate October 26, 2026. For the first 60 days after each location activates, vehicles detected traveling at least 11 mph over the posted speed limit receive written warnings instead of monetary penalties.

Because activation happens in phases, there is no single date when warnings end everywhere. A camera activated later in the year will finish its warning period later, too. For the first cameras, the announced schedule points to monetary enforcement beginning in late December, after their warning periods conclude. abc7.com

There is another warning rule drivers should understand. Even after the introductory period ends, a vehicle’s first violation within Los Angeles for traveling 11 to 15 mph over the limit receives a warning.

That protection does not apply to every first offense. Traveling 16 mph or more over the limit can result in a fine once the camera’s introductory warning period has ended.

Where Are the Los Angeles Speed Cameras?

The city is installing 125 speed safety systems across all 15 City Council districts. Locations were selected using factors such as collision history, speeding, and proximity to vulnerable road users, including schools and senior centers. abc7.com

The program covers selected street segments rather than every block of every named road.

Drivers should check the official LADOT speed camera map and program page for the full location map and rollout updates. Los Angeles Department of Transportation

Review the routes you use for work, school drop-off, and errands. An approved location should not be assumed to be actively issuing fines, particularly during the phased rollout.

Are These Cameras on the 405, 101, or Other Freeways?

The city’s AB 645 program applies to eligible local streets. Its enabling law excludes state routes, including freeways and interstate highways, and roads in unincorporated areas under CHP’s primary jurisdiction.

A listed street segment ending at the 101 Freeway does not mean the camera enforces traffic on the freeway itself.

This is also a City of Los Angeles program. It does not automatically put every city in Los Angeles County on the same activation schedule.

How Do Los Angeles Speed Cameras Work?

The systems detect vehicle speed and photograph the rear license plate of a vehicle exceeding the enforcement threshold. That information identifies the registered owner, who receives the notice.

LADOT administers the program. Its use policy describes camera violations as civil, nonmoving violations, similar in important respects to parking tickets.

The system documents the vehicle, plate, speed, and alleged violation. The policy prohibits photographing people’s faces and using facial recognition.

For drivers, the practical change is straightforward: a speeding notice can arrive even though you never saw an officer, never stopped, and never received a roadside citation.

How Much Are Los Angeles Speed Camera Tickets?

After the applicable warning period, California Vehicle Code Section 22426 sets these civil penalties:

Recorded speed Civil penalty
11 to 15 mph over the posted limit $50, subject to the first-violation warning
16 to 25 mph over the posted limit $100
26 mph or more over the posted limit $200, unless the 100 mph category applies
100 mph or more $500

The $500 category applies at 100 mph, not only above 100 mph.

For example, on a road posted at 35 mph, camera enforcement begins at 46 mph. A recorded speed of 51 mph falls into the $100 tier after the location’s warning period.

The 11 mph threshold is not permission to exceed the limit. Follow the posted speed and adjust for conditions. A camera’s citation threshold is not the same thing as a lawful driving speed.

Will There Be Signs Before the Cameras?

California law requires advance signs identifying photo enforcement and the posted speed limit, no more than 500 feet before the system.

For school zones with a lower limit that applies only at certain times, the law imposes specific enforcement windows and requires flashing beacons to indicate when that school limit is being enforced. FindLaw

Pay attention to the actual signs on your route, particularly where limits change. A wide road or light traffic does not establish a higher speed limit.

Do not assume every camera operates only during school hours simply because a school is nearby. Check the location’s posted restrictions and current program information.

Will a Speed Camera Ticket Add Points or Affect Insurance?

A violation under this program does not add DMV points or cause a license suspension or revocation under the camera statute. LADOT’s use policy also describes these civil, nonmoving violations as not affecting insurance. FindLaw

That distinction matters when deciding how to respond. A mailed speed safety notice follows a different process from an ordinary officer-issued speeding citation.

What If Someone Else Was Driving Your Car?

The notice goes to the registered owner. Saying someone else borrowed your vehicle is not automatically enough to cancel it.

The statute provides specific nonliability procedures, including for a vehicle reported stolen at the time of the violation and qualifying rental or vehicle-sharing arrangements. Read the affidavit and instructions included with the notice before assuming an exception applies.

The written notice must be issued within 15 calendar days of the violation. It must explain the alleged speed, applicable limit, location, penalty, and response procedures. The statute sets a payment deadline of 30 calendar days from mailing, unless the violation is contested through the prescribed process. FindLaw

Can You Fight a Los Angeles Speed Camera Ticket?

Yes. California Vehicle Code Section 22427 provides an administrative review process.

You may request a free initial review within 30 calendar days of the notice’s mailing. If the agency does not cancel it, you may request an administrative hearing within 21 calendar days after the initial review results are mailed.

The hearing generally requires prepayment of the penalty, but an inability-to-pay procedure must be available. Follow the notice carefully so you preserve your rights. FindLaw

Before responding, compare the photograph, plate number, vehicle description, location, date, posted limit, and recorded speed. Save evidence of any mismatch or other relevant issue.

A concern about a ticket’s accuracy is something to document, not a reason to miss the response deadline.

Are Reduced Fines or Payment Options Available?

The pilot’s statutory framework includes financial relief for qualifying recipients. Eligible indigent recipients can receive an 80% reduction, while individuals earning up to 250% of the federal poverty level can qualify for a 50% reduction. Eligibility must be established. source.www.longbeach.gov

Ask the issuing agency about the applicable application, payment plans, and community service options. Los Angeles has also directed LADOT to expand its Community Assistance Parking Program to accommodate qualifying speed safety violation recipients. cityclerk.lacity.org

What Should LA Drivers Do Before October 26?

Check the official location map, read the signs along your usual routes, and keep your vehicle registration mailing address current. Once warnings begin, treat a notice as an opportunity to correct your driving before monetary enforcement starts.

If a notice arrives, identify whether it is a warning, a civil camera violation, or an officer-issued traffic citation. Then review its evidence and response deadline.

For questions about a Los Angeles traffic ticket, contact The Ticket Clinic to discuss the type of citation you received and your options. The correct response depends on the notice and the facts of your case.

This article provides general information, not legal advice. Activation schedules and procedures may change. Verify current information with LADOT and follow the instructions on any notice you receive.
